Varicose Veins in Winter

Winter - The Disappearing Act of Veins

Winter time can impact the body in many ways, including your veins. There are a few reasons why your varicose veins seem worse in summer compared to the colder months.

I will start with the most obvious, which tends to get missed as we are creatures of habit and only human. They have been there all along. Crazy to think but unfortunately true. In the cooler months you are covered up with long pants or dresses and warm clothes, therefore you do not notice your legs. The moment the wardrobe changes, it becomes obvious the veins are present and stand out more.

Secondly and this is more importantly. Veins become stretched, bigger or dilated in the heat and the opposite occurs when they are cold. Now if you have varicose veins that have only started to become visible, you may find in winter they almost appear to have disappeared. At least that is what you tell yourself. If you have large varicose veins already visible it does not make as much of a difference.

Also in the heat when the veins become bigger or stretched there is a higher chance for them to create some form of aching, heaviness or discomfort. This does not always happen for everyone but is definitely a common presentation in summer.
