Endovenous Laser Ablation

Endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) represents the latest advancement in minimally invasive procedures for varicose vein removal, particularly targeting larger and deeper problem veins. 

In the past, dealing with moderate to sizable, deep varicose veins required a surgical approach known as “Stripping,” which was often painful and fraught with numerous complications. 

Furthermore, the recurrence rates of varicose veins within 2 to 5 years after surgery were approximately 50%. This meant that half of the treated veins would reappear within that timeframe. 

EVLA has transformed vein removal by replacing conventional surgery with a minimally invasive laser technology approach.

This varicose vein removal procedure is conveniently conducted in our clinic, requiring no downtime. During an EVLA session, a fine laser fibre is inserted into the affected vein under local anesthesia. 

The laser fibre emits controlled bursts of energy in the form of heat, causing the varicose vein to collapse and disintegrate. Once the vein is sealed, blood is immediately redirected to a healthier neighbouring vein. Post-treatment, we apply snug yet comfortable compression stockings.

Since EVLA is a walk-in, walk-out procedure, you can leave the clinic and resume your regular work or daily routine. This approach is safe and associated with significantly lower complications when compared to traditional surgery. It is often complemented with ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy and phlebectomy at a later date. The success rate for vein closure with EVLAs is impressively high, reaching up to 99.8%.

Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy

Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy (UGS) is an advanced ultrasound technique that allows us to pinpoint hidden problem veins, often considered the “root” cause of varicose veins. This advancement has made varicose vein removal more efficient and reduced the likelihood of recurrence.

UGS is an in-depth approach capable of resolving even the most complex varicose vein cases and is frequently combined with treatments such as Endovenous Laser Ablation and Phlebectomy.

(UGS) utilises duplex ultrasound to map out the affected areas. Subsequently, under the guidance of state-of-the-art ultrasound technology, we inject the sclerosant with exceptional precision, leading to irritation and subsequent hardening and breakdown of the inner vein walls.

Depending on the severity, certain veins may require multiple injections along their entire length to ensure complete closure.

Phlebectomy

A Phlebectomy, pronounced as “flee-bek-tomy,” is a minor surgical procedure designed to remove superficial varicose veins on the leg’s surface through small incisions. 

Phlebectomy stands out as one of the most effective methods for varicose vein removal, offering minimal scarring and a remarkably swift recovery. The entire procedure is carried out under local anesthesia, allowing patients to resume their daily activities after the procedure is completed.

The process begins with a duplex ultrasound to confirm and mark the locations of the superficial leg veins. Subsequently, our medical professional administers local anesthesia around the targeted veins, guided by advanced ultrasound technology. Small, 1 mm incisions are then made. Through these tiny entry points, we gently extract the protruding veins.

The veins are easily removed, without the need for sutures. Subsequently, we apply small adhesive steri-strips and provide comfortable medical stockings for the treated leg. We encourage patients to engage in walking shortly after the procedure. In no time, you can return to your regular activities, now with more aesthetically pleasing and healthier-looking legs.

Varicose vein removal - vein glue treatment

Medical Glue Treatment

Glue or Cyanoacrylate are specialised “super glues” used for closing varicose veins, with remarkable effectiveness and safety for treating abnormal veins.

The approach is straightforward: upon contact with the vein wall, the glue triggers an immediate fusion, sealing the problem vein and gradually dissipating over time. In Australia, several glues are available for this purpose, including Venaseal and Venablock. Both can be administered via catheter-guided techniques, and Venablock can also be directly injected under ultrasound guidance.

The procedure involves ultrasound guidance to target the vein. Subsequently, a unique glue is catheterised and introduced into the vein through a small needle. Applying gentle pressure, we ensure the vein walls adhere together. Lastly, we confirm the vein’s closure with a duplex ultrasound.
