Itching and Varicose Veins

A common correlation that often gets missed is when you start to scratch your legs as a result of varicose veins.

It often happens quite subtly as it becomes automatic to just scratch your legs mid conversation or wake up in the morning with red scratch marks on your legs.

It can be quite obvious when you have large varicose veins that are visible on your legs. Where it becomes a little more challenging is when you are unable to see them on your legs but have hidden varicose veins just below the skin.

The cause of the itching is due to leaking of blood through damaged blood vessels (varicose veins) leading to inflammation and the skin becoming itchy.

Unfortunately, it does not go away and only becomes worst. You can try creams containing corticosteroid but it only gives temporary relief and when stopped it returns. Once the varicose veins get treated then the itching stops.
