“After vein treatments, what can I do to prevent varicose veins?”
“I have had vein treatments, what can I do to stop new varicose veins from forming?”
It is not uncommon that I find my patients wearing compression stockings to try to prevent more veins from breaking down. The studies show no evidence this actually helps.
Unfortunately in terms of prevention there is not much you can do but you can avoid triggers and keep active.
Do not put on too much weight or if you are overweight lose weight. Avoid trauma on the lower limbs.
The older you are when it gets first diagnosed and treated, the less likelihood it will return (Especially with the newer treatments). Those who develop it in their teens or early twenties have a very high genetic predisposition and are more likely to develop more abnormal veins as they get older. Waiting till your older to get treated does not make a difference in these cases. This is obviously a blanket statement but is common in a clinical practice.
