How Common are Varicose Veins?

As much as varicose veins are a problem the commonest presentation are spider veins and reticular veins.

According to the Bonn Vein Study 59% of patients fall under this group followed by 14% with larger varicose veins.

Reticular veins are those slightly greenish veins that look like varicose veins but are much smaller. They sit between spider veins which are thread like and varicose veins that are often larger and ropy.

Most people will sit in this group but with time the reticular veins can slowly become larger and form varicose veins.

It is difficult to predict the progression but we do know that the common triggers like pregnancy, weight gain and strong family history play a big role.
