Varicose veins are abnormal veins.
The blood flowing through them can stagnate and not flow easily, unlike normal veins.
This can give rise to clots forming in them and they become hard and sore to touch.
Not everyone will develop these superficial clots in their veins. Some of the risk factors include:
- Extensive varicose veins or present for a prolonged period
- Being overweight
- Being a smoker
- Past history of either superficial clots or deep clots
If in doubt always check when you feel they are red, hard and sore to touch.
